What Are Fat Injections?
Fat injections, also called fat grafting or fat transfer, add fat tissue beneath the skin to restore volume where it has been lost. Traditionally this meant harvesting your own fat with liposuction, purifying it, and reinjecting it. The results can be excellent, but the procedure is surgical, requires enough fat to harvest, and involves recovery at two sites.
Non-surgical fat injections use processed donor fat tissue that is ready to place. There is no liposuction, no donor site, and the treatment is performed in an office visit with topical or local numbing. The three products available at Radiance Medspa take different approaches to the same goal:

Fat Injections vs. Dermal Fillers vs. Surgical Fat Transfer
Dermal fillers (hyaluronic acid) add volume instantly and are excellent for shaping lips, chin, and defined contours. They replace space, not tissue, and most are metabolized within 9 to 18 months, so maintenance is ongoing.
Surgical fat transfer uses your own fat, harvested by liposuction, purified, and reinjected. Results can be excellent, but it requires enough donor fat, a surgical procedure, and recovery at both the harvest and treatment sites.
Non-surgical fat injections (Renuva, alloClae™, Lipoderma®) use ready-to-use fat tissue. They restore the tissue itself rather than filling space, with no liposuction and minimal downtime.

Fillers still have a place. For lip shape, chin projection, or crisp definition, hyaluronic acid filler is often the right tool, and it can be combined with fat injections. Fat Injections by Treatment Area
- Cheeks and midface. Flattening and hollowing from age or weight loss. Lipoderma® for immediate restoration; Renuva for a gradual build.
- Under eyes. Hollows and shadows that make the face look tired. Lipoderma® is designed for this delicate area; your provider may also consider Selphyller Gel™ or filler.
- Temples and jawline. Thinning that sharpens the face or softens the jaw. Lipoderma® or Renuva.
- Neck and décolleté. Thin, lined, or crepey skin where fat has thinned. Lipoderma® or Renuva, sometimes paired with Sofwave® skin tightening.
- Hands. Prominent tendons, veins, and knuckles. All three options have been used for hands; Lipoderma® and Renuva are most common.
- Hip dips and body contour. Indentations below the hip bone, uneven curves, or irregularities after liposuction. alloClae™ for immediate structural volume; Renuva for small depressions.
- Cellulite dimples and depressed scars. Localized depressions that need a small amount of volume. Renuva.
If your concern is loose skin rather than lost fat, a skin tightening treatment such as Sofwave® or Ultherapy® may be the better fit. If it is excess fat, CoolSculpting® or SculpSure® is the right conversation. We offer all of these, which is why the consultation comes first.
Fat Injections After Weight Loss and GLP-1 Medications
Rapid weight loss, including with Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, or Zepbound, often removes fat from the face and hands before anywhere else. The result is sometimes called "Ozempic face": hollow cheeks, sunken temples, a tired look under the eyes, and skin that appears to sag because the cushion beneath it is gone.
Fat injections address the actual cause by restoring the fat that was lost rather than filling space with gel. For patients who have worked hard to lose weight and want to keep the result without looking older, this is one of the most common reasons we recommend Lipoderma® for the face and hands, Renuva for a gradual rebuild, or alloClae™ for body contours that have deflated.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Fat Injections?
Fat injections are for people who have a true fat deficit and want it restored with fat. You may be a good candidate if you:
- Have hollowing in the cheeks, temples, under eyes, or jawline
- Have lost volume after weight loss or GLP-1 medications
- Have hands that look thin, veiny, or bony
- Want to smooth hip dips or body contour irregularities without implants or surgery
- Have tried fillers and want a more natural material, or feel "filler fatigue"
- Are not a candidate for, or do not want, surgical fat transfer
- Understand that results settle or build over weeks to months
Fat injections may not be appropriate if you have an active infection in the treatment area, a history of severe allergic reaction or anaphylaxis, a condition that affects healing, or if you are pregnant or nursing. They are not a treatment for loose skin, expression lines, pigmentation, or excess fat. Your Radiance provider will review your health history and may recommend a different treatment if it would serve you better.
What to Expect From a Fat Injection Treatment
All three treatments follow a similar path. A complimentary consultation comes first, where your provider assesses where fat has been lost and recommends the option and amount. On treatment day the area is cleansed and marked, numbing is applied, and the product is placed beneath the skin in small, deliberate amounts with attention to symmetry. Most sessions take under an hour. Expect some swelling, bruising, or tenderness for several days; because there is no liposuction site, most patients return to normal activity quickly.
Results differ by product. alloClae™ and Lipoderma® show volume immediately, then settle over the following weeks. Renuva looks fuller at first, softens briefly, and then builds gradually as your own fat replaces the matrix over three to six months.
