Melasma is a common increase of pigmentation that occurs in sun-exposed areas, in particularly on the face. Brownish in colour, melasma is made worse by sun exposure, pregnancy, oral contraceptives and certain anti-epilepsy drugs. Questions & Answers 1. How many treatments are necessary? Although results may be seen with the first treatment often 2-3 treatments are necessary to achieve optimal results. 2.How long is the treatment? The in office treatment takes approximately 30 minutes. The skin will be cleansed with the "de-greasing" solution and the Cosmelan® mask is applied. The client goes home with the mask on the face and with instructions and the products continue care for the next week. Follow up visits at the office are required at 1 week, 2 weeks and one month to monitor progress. 3.How much "down time" is involved with the peel? Generally there is redness and some swelling for the first week. This subsides gradually. There may also be some peeling of the skin and the degree of peeling depends on the individual. Most people will want to allow at least one week when their skin will not look it’s best and they do not expect to have any important social engagements. 4.Can I go out in the sun after a treatment? It is always advisable to protect your skin from the harmful rays of the sun in order to prevent sun damage.
